A little about Ateso language
Ateso, also known as Teso is a dialect of Lake Nilotics spoken by the Iteso people in Eastern Uganda. It is spoken in the districts of Soroti, Kumi, Katakwi, Serere, Pallisa, Kaberamaido, Ngora, Amuria, Tororo, Bugiri, Busia, Bukedea, Ngora among others in what is known as Teso sub-region . It is one of the most spoken indigenous languages of Uganda.
The Iteso people are known for their alcoholic drink called “Ajon” in Ateso and “Malwa” in bantu languages which is consumed across Uganda and across the region and their cultural leader known as “Emorimor”
It should be noted that Ateso is closely related to Kumam, Maasai and Turkana of Kenya and Tanzania, and Oromo of Kenya and Ethiopia. The language is native to Uganda and Kenya respectively.
Some of the notable prominent Ateso speakers include; Hon. Ojamong Sospeter, Mr. Oduya Oprong, Pancrus Otwani, Albert Ekirapa, Professor John Okedi, Hon. Christine Amongin Aporu, Hon. Mike Mukula, Hon. Musa Ecweru, among others.
